Temporary Employment Classifications

Temporary or Seasonal Hourly Employees:
  • Employment is on a temporary basis for less than six months full time or less than nine months part-time. These employees are classified as "employees-at-will", (may be terminated with or without cause at any time). A temporary hourly employee may be reclassified after nine months to a regular part-time employee.
  • Wage rates are paid on an hourly basis and are determined by market survey, the department supervisor and the Human Resources Office. These employees are paid on the last working day of each month.
  • Deductions are automatically made from employee's paycheck for Federal Withholding Tax, Utah State Withholding Tax, and FICA.
  • Not eligible for University benefits except those required by law, such as Worker's Compensation. (See information on Worker's Compensation.)
Contracted Services Employees:
  • Terms of service are stipulated on a contracted services form and a fixed price rate established. Payment for services is on last working day of month service was completed.
  • Deductions are automatically made from employee's paycheck for Federal Withholding Tax, Utah State Withholding Tax, and FICA.
  • Not eligible for University benefits except those required by law, such as Worker's Compensation. (See information on Worker's Compensation.)
Student Hourly Employees:
  • A student employee must be registered for at least six hours of classes in the semester they are working. Employment is temporary or seasonal and paid on an hourly basis.
  • Wage rates are set at minimum wage or by the Human Resources Office and the department supervisor.
  • Student employees are not eligible for FICA if they work less than 20 hours per week.
  • Not eligible for University benefits except those required by law, such as Worker's Compensation. (See information on Worker's Compensation.)
